Understanding the New 2024 Home Efficiency Rebate Program
July 17, 2024
On July 15th, 2024, Enbridge Gas launched its new Home Efficiency Rebate program for Ontario homeowners, offering up to $5,000 in rebates for energy efficiency upgrades, including insulation throughout the home. This program is the latest in rebate offerings for Ontario homeowners to improve the energy efficiency of their home and follows the successful Canada Greener Homes Grant program that was co-delivered by NRCan and Enbridge Gas.
Since the closure of the Canada Greener Homes Grant in February 2024, homeowners have been asking for a new rebate program to help make insulation and energy efficiency retrofits more affordable, and we’re happy to help you understand this new program and its potential benefits for your home!
Insulation and Air Sealing Rebates
The new Home Efficiency Rebate program offers several rebates for insulation upgrades and air sealing. Here are the maximum available insulation and air sealing rebates for each section of the home:
- Exterior Wall Insulation: Up to $3,600
- Attic Insulation: Up to $1,500
- Basement Insulation: Up to $3,500
- Crawl Space Insulation: Up to $1,200
- Exposed Floor Insulation: $300
- Air Sealing: $180
The Impact of Energy Efficiency Rebate Programs
Energy efficiency programs like the new Home Efficiency Rebate and its predecessor, the Canada Greener Homes Grant (CGHG), play an important role in transforming our homes and communities to be more energy efficient and affordable. Thanks to information provided by NRCan, we have information from the CGHG program to better understand the potential of these initiatives:
- Widespread Participation: In just three years, over half a million Canadians applied for the CGHG. While the new Home Efficiency Rebate is Ontario-only, this demonstrates the strong public interest in home energy improvements.
- Significant Energy Savings: Homeowners who received CGHG grants are now saving an average of $386 per year on their energy bills. This not only helps families financially but also reduces overall energy demand.
- Environmental Impact: Each home upgraded through the CGHG program reduced pollution by an average of 1.2 tonnes per year. In total, this equated to taking almost 60,000 cars off the road!
With the launch of the new Home Efficiency Rebate program, Ontario homeowners have the opportunity to receive rebates for their home insulation upgrades for the first time since February, providing efficiency upgrades and lower energy costs for the end of our hot summer season and ahead of the upcoming colder weather.
Taking Advantage of the Program
The new Home Efficiency Rebate program provides an excellent opportunity for Ontario homeowners to improve their home's energy efficiency. By focusing on insulation upgrades and air sealing, you can create a more comfortable living environment, reduce energy consumption, and save on utility bills.
To qualify for these rebates, you'll need to be an Enbridge Gas customer at the time of the pre- or post-work energy audit, which needs to be completed by an energy advisor listed by Enbridge Gas as being qualified to complete audits for the program. It's also important to note that you must complete at least two eligible upgrades to qualify for the program.
We recommend considering a free assessment from Great Northern Insulation ahead of your pre-work energy audit. This will provide you with a no-obligation quote for insulation upgrades, meaning you can calculate the overall cost of your insulation improvements, including the money returned by the Home Efficiency Rebate, before paying for the pre-work energy audit.
