Homeowners can now realize up to $5,000 in Union Gas rebates just by making improvements to home energy. For those who are planning renovations, upgrades, or retrofits, the Home Reno Rebate Program from Union Gas can turn a planned home energy improvement into reality.

Union Gas rebates are available on a range of renovations
By improving energy efficiency, property owners are eligible for up to $5,000 in rebates. The fact is, a high-quality energy retrofit can reduce annual energy bills by 20%. More than that, a home that is energy efficient is more attractive on the real estate market to a prospective homebuyer.

In terms of project work, at least two renovations must be undertaken, depending on the home’s heating source. As well, an accredited professional contractor must do a pre-reno assessment and a post-reno assessment. The rebate process is complete when all of the required paperwork is submitted directly to Union Gas. Rebate cheques are then forwarded to the property owner.
A Registered Energy Advisor must complete an assessment
To take full advantage of Union Gas rebates, a Registered Energy Advisor must complete a pre-reno and post-reno assessment. These advisors will provide homeowners with third party advice on improving energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption.
Registered Energy Advisors work with licensed service organizations accredited by NRCan. Every assessment adheres to guidelines that are part of Canada’s EnerGuide Rating System. By working with accredited companies, homeowners are assured of quality.
To comply with the Home Reno Rebate Program, property owners must ensure their eligibility; choose a Registered Energy Advisor; hire a reputable contractor; assemble invoices; and satisfy the required deadlines of the program.
Pre-qualifications when applying for Union Gas rebates
To ensure rebate eligibility and professional workmanship, there are various pre-qualifications with the Home Reno Rebate Program. Also, applicants must pay HST on both energy assessments.
- property owners must heat with oil, gas, or propane (furnace or boiler)
- also eligible are wood burning stoves (homes heated electrically are not)
- homes must be defined as detached; semi-detached; townhouse; mobile
There are also some geographic requirements with Union Gas rebates:
- must be a customer of Union Gas or reside in the franchise region
- must be a customer of Kitchener Utility or reside in Kitchener area
- must be a customer of Utilities Kingston or reside in Kingston area
- must be a Natural Resources Gas customer or live in franchise area
